The Rape Crisis Center is still actively recruiting volunteers and interns! Those who complete the application requirements will be placed on standby and can begin their service once we are allowed to resume regular person-to-person interaction. Positions are contingent upon passing the drug test at this time.
Intern Requirements
You must be at least 18 years of age
We require a six month commitment for all interns. Hours are determined with the student’s college.
Everyone will have to consent to a background check and a drug test.
Due to our licensing requirements, anyone receiving our services must wait 2 years before they can intern.
If you have lived experience (with a trauma), we require that at least 5 years have passed since the incident.
Intern Opportunities
HOSPITAL ADVOCATE
MEDIA AND MARKETING
Assist in all general communication efforts for the organization. Work with RCC departments to ensure events and services are marketed through all internet platforms as well as distributing flyers at tabling events and other venues throughout San Antonio. This internship requires a high level of technical and digital media communication knowledge and skill; as well as the ability to work with diverse populations. Read the Scope of Work.
GENERALIST: HOTLINE, FRONT OFFICE AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH
This intern works directly with clients and performs clerical and administrative duties. They will answer the hotline; screen potential clients, and provide information and referrals along with crisis intervention if necessary. Read the Scope of Work.
COUNSELING INTERN
The Clinical Director accepts applications only when the application period begins for each semester. There is no deadline. Applications are accepted until all positions have been filled, so you are encouraged to apply as soon as the application period opens.
- Fall Semester: Applications accepted starting in mid-June
- Spring Semester: Applications accepted starting November 1st
- Summer Semester: Applications accepted starting in mid-March
All applicants must be at least master’s level in counseling or related areas and have 50 direct client contact hours at the time of application.
All applicants will need to submit:
- Intern application (see below under How to Get Started section)
- Your resume (with references) and a non-official transcript.
- Responses to the following questions (can be submitted in your response email or in an attachment)
- Tell us what motivated your interest in pursuing your practicum/internship at the Rape Crisis Center.
- Explain your predominant theoretical orientation.
- Describe previous experiences or a particular strength that might be helpful when working with survivors and their families.
- What do you think are the challenges and special considerations of working with this population?

EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH
This intern will work at a macro level by engaging individuals in events, raising awareness of the RCC’s services, and elevating the RCC’s profile in the community. The internship position involves a high level of in-person interaction with staff and community members alike. Interns will assist with community outreach: tabling events, event coordination and implementation, and shadowing of community-based presentations and workshops. Read the Scope of Work.
FUNDRAISING AND GRANT WRITING
Help plan and facilitate small local fundraisers and get great experience doing grant research and writing. Represent the RCC by tabling at local fundraising and community outreach events. Read the Scope of Work.

Attend Meeting with Volunteer Director
Upon acceptance, you will be notified of orientation dates. During this time we are conducting our usual in-person meetings over phone and Zoom.

Complete Online Training
The required 40-hour Office of Attorney General training course will take place online. Additional information and details will be provided upon acceptance.
Intern Application
FUTURE INTERNS:
- Upon review of your application, you may be invited to the center to meet in person. You will need to watch the 45-minute Office for Victims of Crime webinar on Sexual Assault (under the crimes section of the webinars page). Please bring the certificate of completion to your appointment.
- Training and orientation are held at The Rape Crisis Center unless otherwise noted. Attendance at each training session is required to become a volunteer.
